What you will learn
An overview of the individual, familiar and societal theories of family violence will be presented including an examination of how specific theoretical perspectives have helped shape different government policies and community services.
The Understanding Family Violence course at the University of Manitoba will also review the current controversies, new approaches and cultural issues in the area of domestic violence intervention.
Programme Structure
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:- explain, in practical and theoretical terms, why family violence occurs
- recognize the myths and realities of family violence
- recognize and examine personal attitudes and feelings about family violence
- explain how family violence affects individuals who are victimized and why it can be difficult for many to speak out and seek help, support and safety
- explain why individuals use violence against others
- effectively assess and appropriately intervene with victims and offenders of family violence
- be cognizant of and adapt as needed his or her own clinical and culturally-appropriate personal helping style
- identify what resources are available and appropriately utilize pertinent resources for support, referral and reporting
