The concept of self-care encompasses a wide range of aspects that play an important role in staying healthy and thus enabling professionals to function at their optimum.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this Caring for the Caregiver course at the University of Manitoba, you should be able to:

  • recognize his or her own defense patterns used in communication
  • identify self-care strategies, and teach and mentor others to apply these strategies
  • recognize and characterize secondary trauma and its impact on the caregiver
  • apply effective strategies for finding support in his or her own life as a caregiver
  • coach and mentor caregivers on accessing appropriate supports
