About

This Street Network Planning and Design course can count towards the MSc Transport Engineering and Planning at the UWE Bristol (University of the West of England).

Overview

Well-designed streets and junctions are crucial to enabling people to move efficiently, particularly (though not only) within urban centres where space is constrained. Street designers also have an important role to play in the creation of high-quality, healthy built environments.

Key Features

In this Street Network Planning and Design module at the UWE Bristol (University of the West of England) you will learn how to evaluate, plan and design people centred, multi-modal streets and junctions. You will examine how best practice street and junction design principles accommodate the needs of all groups in society, giving consideration to characteristics such as age, gender, and disability; and making appropriate provision for all forms of movement, including walking, wheeling, cycling, public transport and general traffic. The module will support your approach to street and junction design issues by also developing your knowledge of road safety and risk management, conceptions of movement and place, traffic flow theory and junction capacity analysis, including the application of industry standard junction modelling techniques.

Programme Structure

On completion of this module, students are able to:

  • Evaluate and design multi-modal networks, streets and junctions considering the needs of all users
  • Analyse and compare the performance and capacity of priority, roundabout and signal controlled junctions against design criteria
  • Explain and apply traffic flow theory
  • Evaluate road safety problems and propose road safety interventions

Learning and Teaching

  • The course will be delivered through a series of classes to learn street design principles and analytical techniques.
  • These classes will be mixed with site visits and design workshops where students apply principles to a real-world street design project.
  • The module also includes computer laboratories to teaches students to junction modelling techniques.
