Overview
The Animal Welfare and Veterinary programme from Cerca Abroad is an exceptional opportunity for aspiring veterinarians, pre-vet students, and animal enthusiasts to immerse themselves in meaningful hands-on work.
This program is hosted at a dedicated animal shelter and clinic, founded and led by a licensed veterinarian, where you’ll be actively involved in animal rescue, veterinary care, and community education.
What You’ll Gain
Under the mentorship of an experienced veterinarian, you’ll:
- Build Practical Skills: Assist in surgeries, treatments, vaccinations, and overall animal healthcare at a functional clinic.
- Participate in Rescue Operations: Help rescue and rehabilitate animals in need, providing immediate care and long-term solutions.
- Contribute to Shelter Activities: Care for rescued animals, including dogs, cats, chickens, donkeys, and cows, ensuring their welfare and recovery.
- Engage in Community Outreach: Raise awareness about responsible pet ownership and animal welfare in local communities.
- Explore Rural Veterinary Practices: Accompany veterinarians to farms and homes around Arusha, learning about common ailments, diseases, and the challenges of veterinary medicine in Tanzania.

Daily Activities Include:- Assisting in medical procedures, including surgeries and treatments.
- Supporting vaccination campaigns and providing immediate care to animals in need.
- Participating in educational outreach programs on responsible pet care.
- Engaging in shelter maintenance and animal welfare improvement projects.

General requirements
- Must be 18 years old or over and preferably with least one year of undergraduate study completed, with a relevant scientific major such as such as biology, animal sciences, veterinary sciences etc.
- Interns must have a genuine interest in veterinary sciences and commitment to observation of both surgical and non surgical procedures.
