Overview
You will visit the nanoscale quantum universe and see how nanoscale objects can be tuned for disease targeting. You will gain perspectives in the environmental and global impact of new medicines and consider equity and sustainability in their introduction.
You will take part in a structured problem-based learning (PBL) project. Working in groups, you will investigate real-world nanomedicine challenges, propose solutions and assess their potential impact.
During this Nanotechnology in Medicine course from UCL Summer School you will see how this small-scale technology offers huge leaps in diagnostics and therapeutics, enabling us to break the boundary from macroscale anatomy to nanoscale biologics.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students will have:
- Understood why size matters in medical applications of nanotechnology.
- Understood the impact of the nanoscale on the laws of physics and resulting effects on chemical and biological interactions.
- Understood how nanotechnology can be applied to clinical imaging modalities to increase sensitivity and specificity of magnetic resonance imaging and x-ray-based imaging.
- Understood how nanotechnology can be applied in drug delivery and radiotherapy to enhance tumour cell kill and localise cancer treatment.
