Overview
The International Business Strategy and Development course from UCL Summer School integrates three core themes: international business, offering conceptual foundations in globalisation, internationalisation, and extroversion; strategy, focusing on when, where, and how strategic thinking should be applied globally; and business development, introducing practical models and frameworks for implementing international strategies.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students will have:
- Identified the key drivers of international business and assessed their differential impacts on firms.
- Explained the basic theories of international business and critically examined their relevance to contemporary global business.
- Identified international business strategies suitable per case on the type of business, goals and objectives.
- Identified business development practices to support international business strategies.
- Integrated the disciplines of business strategy and business development for international business management.
- Debated critically and respectfully.
- Delivered arguments orally and in writing.
- Worked collaboratively on a group presentation.
- Understood and expressed the value of a study abroad experience in developing an academic and professional career pathway.

- Globalisation eras: history, drivers, and forces; Globalisation 1.0–3.0; theories of Friedman, Ghemawat, Krugman, Stiglitz
- Multinational enterprises: types and characteristics; Integration–Responsiveness Framework
- International landscape tools: GAGE, Uppsala Model, PEST/PESTEL, National Competitive Advantage, regional clusters
- Human factors: international HRM, Hofstede, Company Democracy Model
- Emerging markets: characteristics and hubs; EU, G7, E7, G8, BRICS, OECD, MSCI, Bloomberg; case studies
