Overview
Oxford Summer Courses – Psychology : Core focus
The Psychology programme at Oxford Summer Courses in Oxford is designed for students who are curious about human behaviour, thought, and emotion. The course introduces psychology as a scientific and analytical subject, exploring how the mind works, how behaviour develops, and how psychological research helps explain everyday decisionâmaking and mental health.
How you’ll learn
Teaching takes place in small, discussionâbased classes, where students actively engage with psychological ideas rather than memorising facts. Tutors guide learners through case studies, realâworld examples, and structured discussion, helping students learn how psychologists analyse behaviour, evaluate evidence, and question assumptions.
Specialisations / Pathways (topic exploration)
There is no fixed curriculum; instead, content adapts to tutor expertise and student interests. This flexible structure allows students to explore a range of psychology pathways, including:
- Cognition and memory (how we think, learn, and remember)
- Social behaviour (why people behave differently in groups and societies)
- Development and mental health (how behaviour changes over time and how wellbeing is supported)
- Applied psychology (using psychological ideas to understand realâworld situations)
This structure helps students build a broad foundation while discovering which aspects of psychology interest them most.
Academic development, reflection & skills
The programme includes structured reflection sessions and skillsâfocused activities such as teamwork and debating. Students develop transferable skills including critical thinking, evidenceâbased reasoning, communication, and ethical awareness—key foundations for future study in psychology and related subjects.
Career paths for alumni
While designed for early learners, the course supports informed progression toward future study and careers in areas such as:
- Psychology and Behavioural Sciences
- Mental Health and Wellbeing
- Neuroscience and Cognitive Science
- Education and Child Development
- Health and Social Sciences
Students leave with a clearer understanding of what studying psychology involves and how it connects to academic and professional pathways.

- Learning in a small group (no more than 8 students and often fewer) means that you get quality time with your teacher and ask as many questions as you like! Through interactive learning, our teachers will guide you through new concepts and assign you practice tasks to build your knowledge and skills.
- You will also have an opportunity for group work, independent research, and homework assignments to be discussed in class. Small classes mean everyone gets to have their say, and students learn from debating with one another, as well as from their tutor.
