Overview
Oxford Summer Courses – PPE : Core focus
The Philosophy, Politics and Economics programme at Oxford Summer Courses in Oxford is designed for students who want to understand how societies are organised, governed, and influenced by ideas and resources. The course introduces this interdisciplinary subject as a way of analysing complex global issues by combining ethical reasoning, political structures, and economic systems.
How you’ll learn
Teaching follows the Oxford tutorial-style approach, with small-group seminars that encourage independent thought, structured argument, and open discussion. Tutors guide students through debates, written analysis, and critical evaluation of key ideas, helping them develop confidence in questioning assumptions and defending their viewpoints. Independent work is reviewed in tutorials to support academic depth and clarity.
Specialisations / Pathways
There is no fixed curriculum; instead, content adapts to tutor expertise and group interests. This allows students to explore a range of Philosophy, Politics and Economics pathways, including:
- Philosophy and ethics (justice, morality, and reasoning)
- Politics and international relations (power, governance, and global institutions)
- Economics and behavioural economics (markets, incentives, and decision-making)
- Interdisciplinary analysis (connecting ideas across all three disciplines)
This structure reflects how the subject is studied at university while remaining exploratory and accessible for pre-university students.
Academic development, enrichment & feedback
The programme includes tutorial Q&A sessions, an academic skills masterclass, expert speakers, and visits to Oxford colleges. Students receive structured feedback on their work, a certificate of completion, and a personalised letter of recommendation, supporting competitive university applications.
Career paths for alumni
While exploratory in nature, the course supports informed progression toward future study and careers in areas such as:
- Politics and Public Policy
- Economics and Management
- Philosophy, Ethics, and Social Theory
- Law and International Relations
- Journalism, Government, and Think Tanks
Students leave with a clearer understanding of how Philosophy, Politics and Economics connect academic disciplines to leadership, policy, and global decision-making.

- Learn the Oxford way with tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will foster self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive seminars in small groups (no bigger than 8). During your course, you will complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will then evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial.
- Tutorials will provide you with the opportunity to discuss your work and feedback with your tutor and learn new perspectives from your classmates. On completion of the course, you'll receive a certificate and letter of recommendation from your tutor.
